Substitutions
- Vodka — This one is a cornerstone item in most cocktails, and our adult Capri Sun recipe is no exception as well. The good thing with vodka is that you get to be pretty flexible. Cheap options would not only work well, but they also make the most sense. Most adult Capri Sun recipes call for either strawberry vodka or citrus vodka. You could also mix the two if you’re looking for an even more authentic and fruitier experience.
- Other liquor options — Tequila is usually the best substitute for vodka in most cocktail recipes. You don’t have to spend a ton of money, so don’t go with an Anejo. We’d recommend going with silver tequila, one of the cheapest ones.
Rum is always a good substitute for vodka when making an adult Capri Sun, adding a depth of flavor to your drink. In a unique twist, gin will work fine too. And if you don’t have strict rules when it comes to whiskey you might want to try that one out as well.
- Fruit juice — If liquor is the soul of your adult Capri Sun, then the fruit juice is the heart of it. You'd be better off with your preferred fruit juice and not whatever you have at that moment. Although it will require some work, if you have the time and energy, we’d recommend making some pink lemonade at home. It not only provides some much-needed acidity and flavor, but it also lightens up your drink with some vibrant colors. Other popular options like cranberry juice, orange juice, and even pineapple juice would work just fine.
Variations
- Experiment — How would you define an adult Capri Sun? There are different adult Capri Sun recipes out there, and a Pina Colada is one of them. It’s as tropical as it gets, and all you need is some pineapple juice, coconut cream, and rum. Don’t forget about the Capri Sun pouch.
On the other hand, you could also make a margarita; with tequila, lime juice, and some triple sec. Ever heard of Cosmopolitan? Simply mix some cranberry juice, lime juice, triple sec, and finally vodka. Pour it all into your Capri Sun pouch, and you’re all set!
Equipment
- Juice pouch.
- Cocktail shaker.
- Measuring cup.
- Plastic straws.
- Funnel — optional.
Storage
- Transfer any leftover adult Capri Sun into a jar with a lid. Label the jar with the name and the date of the drink to keep track of it.
- Different alcoholic beverages have different expiry dates, so you should also pay attention to the ingredients you use.
Tips
- The alcohol — Although there is probably a minimum and a maximum amount of alcohol you should be using, that doesn’t mean that you can’t adjust the alcohol content in your adult Capri Sun. If you’re simply looking for a chilly afternoon, you might not want to go overboard with the amount of alcohol you use. If, however, it’s been a rough day, feel free to go with an even stronger adult Capri Sun.
- The funnel — There is a mistake that is common even among experienced cocktail makers, which is usually creating a mess while pouring your drink into the Capri Sun pouch. You might want to use a funnel to avoid that.
- The pouches — Make sure that you go with quality pouches that are also reusable and portable. Also, make sure that your Capri Sun pouch is clean.
