One of our favorite times of the year is the country fair. Although these days they seem more like ghosts of what they used to be in our childhood, we still make sure to bring the whole family when there is one in town. We like to enjoy the carnival and have some of those delicious elephant ears, or fried dough.
We love fried dough so much that we sometimes cook them for breakfast, or as a side dish for lazy dinners. That buttery fried dough with cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top is heavenly. The best thing about this fried dough recipe is that it only takes fifteen minutes to prepare. Plus, you can also make them completely gluten-free too. Let’s take a look.

Substitutions
- Self-rising flour — If you happen to find yourself short on all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt, free to opt for self-rising flour instead. Although your dough won’t be sticky as it would be with all-purpose flour, you’ll end with a more tender one.
- Coconut oil — As a healthy option, coconut oil makes a great substitute for vegetable oil. It is completely vegan and is completely made up of fat. It also has a higher smoking point, which would suit you better especially if you’re planning on cooking at high heat.
Variations
- Gluten-free — Gluten-free diets are on the rise, as it is now believed to be a healthier option. Luckily, our fried dough recipe can be adjusted. Substitute the all-purpose flour for a gluten-free one such as almond flour, buckwheat flour, and amaranth flour.
Equipment
- Medium-sized mixing bowl.
- Measuring cups and spoons.
- Whisk.
- Large skillet.
Storage
- Wrap the leftover fried dough pieces in foil, put them in an airtight container, and you can store them in your fridge for 4-5 days.
Tips
- Not sweet enough? — If you’d like your dough a tad sweeter, you might want to add 1-2 tbsp. of sugar into your dry mix.
- Best condiments — Although this fried dough recipe is certainly enough to fill you with happiness on its own, there is certainly no harm in pairing these small delights with some condiments. The most ideal ones would be maple syrup, honey, and tomato sauce.
