It has a balance of sour and sweet thanks to lime juice and lots of sugar, so you also get to be spicy with the hot sauce.

    Substitutions

    • The tequila — Choosing the right tequila is the most important aspect of our Mexican candy shot recipe. While you have complete freedom in choosing the tequila, going with a 100% agave one is crucial for the best experience. Silver or Blanco tequila will help your budget. However, if you have room for it, we recommend opting for something more expensive, with gold tequila being a prime example. Since gold tequila is aged in oak barrels, it will taste much smoother. However, it should be noted that there are fairly different versions of Mexican candy shot recipes out there. Some of these swap tequila for a different type of alcohol, such as rum or vodka. Keep in mind that our recipe stays true to the original one, making it more authentic.
    • The rimming — White sugar is the go-to option when it comes to rimming. While it is true that white sugar is a safe harbor, why not make things spicy? You can replace the white sugar with Tajin seasoning for an even more authentic experience, which is a fairly popular Mexican spice blend. However, keep in mind that with the addition of Tajin seasoning, you might need to tone down the amount of hot sauce in your Mexican candy shot recipe.
