    Ingredients

    • Canned tomatoes — 1 can (14 oz.), diced
    • Garlic — 2 tbsp., minced
    • Onion — 1 large, chopped
    • Salt — 2 tsp.
    • Ground cumin — 1 tbsp.
    • Lime juice — 2 tbsp.
    • Roma tomatoes — 2 whole, chopped
    • Jalapenos — 2 whole, seeded and chopped
    • Cilantro — ⅓ cup, chopped
    • Red pepper flakes — ½ tsp.

    Instructions

    1. Add each ingredient to your food processor.
    1. Blend until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, and the salsa has a smooth consistency.
    1. Taste the salsa and adjust the seasoning accordingly. Add more salt and red pepper flakes if needed.
    1. Transfer to an airtight container and chill for half an hour before serving.

    Substitutions

    • Lime juice — Lime juice is crucial in most recipes of this kind, and the On the Border salsa recipe makes the best of it. It provides a sour flavor, along with some acidity that this recipe needs. However, apple cider vinegar will provide a richer flavor with better results. The vinegar provides a rich flavor that lime juice simply can’t match. Lemon juice would be another option.
    • Jalapenos — As a general rule of thumb, spicy salsa is better than milder. Although jalapenos are not as hot as people think, they still provide enough heat. You can opt for cayenne pepper powder if they’re not your cup of tea. You could also use hot sauce, which isn’t commonly used in most salsas.
    • Red pepper flakes — Red pepper flakes are one of the most common ingredients in your average salsa, including On the Border salsa recipe. Still, that doesn’t mean they are irreplaceable. Chili powder, hot sauce, and cayenne pepper powder are viable alternatives.
    • Cilantro — It is recommended that you stick with this one, as it provides an earthy and complex flavor that is hard to miss. Still, some people might have a problem with cilantro because it tends to dominate the salsa. You can use parsley, oregano, or basil instead.

    Variations

    • Spicy — Although jalapeno provides some heat, it might not be enough for some due to the milder nature of the ingredient. Serrano peppers, on the other hand, are at least twice as hot. Give it a try if you dare.
    • Summertime salsa — This one might be controversial among some, but still, it deserves a mention. Summer vibes are not exactly what you think of when it comes to salsa, but you might want to consider adding some fresh summer berries to the mix. Blueberries and strawberries, once added to the blender among the other ingredients, give this On the Border salsa recipe a unique twist.

    Equipment

    • Measuring cups and spoons
    • Food processor
    • Airtight container

    Storage

    • Once transferred to an airtight container or a jar with a firm lid and refrigerated properly, the leftover salsa lasts for two weeks.
    • Freezing the salsa will result in a longer shelf life. Divide the salsa into individual proportions and transfer it to ziplock bags. Once stored in your freezer, the leftover salsa lasts three months.

    Pro Tips

    • Serving — This On the Border salsa recipe is quite flexible, which means you can pair the salsa with various other foods. The most common ones are tacos, nachos, and tortillas, though the options are limitless.
    • Blend more — If you realize that your salsa has a somewhat thin consistency, resembling a soup, you should blend for an extra minute or two.
