When talking about Freddy’s famous chain restaurant, you might be thinking about the delicious fries, onion rings, and the rest. However, they are most famous for their fry sauce. Let’s say that after trying this Freddy’s fry sauce recipe, there is a good chance that you will know why.
This sauce is all-around great, with a mix of rich flavors with vinegar, some much-needed umami tastes with all-purpose seasoning, and the classical ketchup-mayo pairing. The ingredients balance each other perfectly. There is room for tweaks and customization as well.

Substitutions
- Mayonnaise — Just like the original one, we’ve also opted to use mayonnaise in our copycat Freddy's fry sauce recipe, simply because it works so well that there isn't a point in substituting it. It provides a tangy flavor, with a smooth and creamy texture.
Sour cream might be better, with a similar tanginess and creaminess, though your Freddy’s fry sauce will probably taste a bit different. Buttermilk and Greek yogurt are other alternatives that you might want to try, as well.
- Vinegar — The original Freddy’s fry sauce recipe calls for vinegar and does a great job in providing a complex and deep flavor to your sauce, and also helps balance the rich taste of mayonnaise and ketchup.
Just like mayonnaise, the other alternatives fail to provide a flavor that is as rich and complex as vinegar provides. Pickle juice, for example, is a common alternative to vinegar. If you’ve accepted the loss of the flavor that vinegar brings to the table, then you could also get away with using lemon juice or lime juice.
- All-purpose seasoning — All-purpose seasoning is a blend of various herbs and spices like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cumin. So even if you don’t have all-purpose seasoning or simply don’t want to use that much seasoning, you should still at least add two or three of those to the mix. Maybe a simple mix of garlic powder and onion powder will do the job for you. Or, if you’d like some heat, hot paprika, and hot pepper is the way to go.
If you’d like something different, what about using Worcestershire sauce? That one successfully provides some much-needed complex umami flavor. Soy sauce will work well too, just make sure to go with a low-sodium one if you’d like to control the amount of salt. How about a splash or two of Tabasco, a delightful hot sauce that could take your sauce to the next level?
Variations
- Honey mustard fry sauce — For some extra tanginess and sweetness, don’t be afraid to add a bit of honey and mustard to the mix. You’ll get addicted to this version, especially if you have a sweet tooth and would prefer your fry sauce without the heat.
- Spicy fry sauce — You might have seen above about adding some Tabasco to the mix for some extra heat. While hot paprika and Tabasco will bring in some spice, if you’re one of those who simply have a thing for spice and you think you could handle it, you might want to consider using a mix of Tabasco and Sriracha, and then add some chili powder.
