Substitutions
- Mayonnaise — There is a reason why McDonald’s Big Mac sauce recipe calls for mayonnaise. Regardless, mayonnaise might not always be an option, so we went ahead and made the recipe using Miracle Whip. Still, it turned out to be fine, so don’t be afraid to try it. Sour cream would be another option, as well as Greek yogurt if you are bold enough.
- Granulated sugar — While granulated sugar would be a nice touch, keep in mind that McDonald’s Big Mac sauce recipe uses sweet dill pickle as well, so you might end up with something sweeter than you intended. If you think that’d be the case, feel free to skip the granulated sugar. You could opt for brown sugar as well, which is a cool twist that gives your sauce a deeper taste. At least that was the case with us.
- White vinegar — While white vinegar works the best, apple cider vinegar comes fairly close as well. We tried to make McDonald’s Big Mac sauce recipe using lemon juice too, but the difference in taste was more recognizable.
Variations
- Smoky — Lots of things could be said for McDonald’s Big Mac sauce recipe, but it can always get better. For a smoky flavor, try incorporating a tablespoon or so of ketchup into the mix. BBQ sauce would be a better option if ketchup won’t cut it for you.
- Spicy — McDonald’s Big Mac sauce is not spicy, but you could change that easily. To give the sauce a bit of heat, we added some paprika into the mix. Nothing much, just a teaspoon or so would be enough. If that won’t be spicy enough for you, you could also add half a tablespoon of Tabasco.
