A healthy diet is simply not complete without a cheat meal every now and then. A cheat meal will be a part of any diet, regardless of the specifics, so you can only choose what it will be. Needless to say, there are still boundaries and lines, so a 1000-calorie meal is out of the question. Instead, this is a well-crafted, above-average calorie meal. When it comes to that, Rock's French toast recipe is the one to go.

Although he is a movie star these days, don’t let that confuse you. The Rock is, first and foremost, a force of nature in everything bodybuilding and diet. Hence, it’s no surprise that one of the best cheat meals ever comes from the man himself. This French toast packs a good amount of calories, but every single one of them is worth it. The crunchy Challah bread is soaked in a perfect egg-vanilla mixture, toasted to perfection, and topped with a savory banana foster sauce. Oh, and it’s served with roasted macadamia nuts. Can it really get any better?

    The Rock's French toast

    Ingredients

    • Heavy cream — ½ cup
    • Granulated sugar — ¼ cup
    • Vanilla extract — 1 tbsp. + ½ tsp.
    • Ripe banana — 1 medium-sized, sliced
    • Dark brown sugar — ½ cup
    • Butter — 6 tbsp.
    • Eggs — 2 large
    • Whole milk — ½ cup
    • Ground cinnamon — 1 tsp.
    • Macadamia nuts — ¼ cup, roughly chopped and roasted
    • Challah bread — 4 slices

    Instructions

    1. Combine the heavy cream, granulated sugar, and ½ tsp. vanilla extract in a bowl.
    1. Beat using an electric mixer at medium speed for 45 seconds.
    1. Set aside for now.
    1. Then, combine the eggs, whole milk, cinnamon, and the remaining 1 tbsp. vanilla extract in a mixing bowl.
    1. Whisk until smooth.
    1. Combine the egg mixture with the cream mixture. Whisk until smooth.
    1. Start preparing the banana foster sauce: Add the banana slices, dark brown sugar, and 4 tbsp. butter to a saucepan.
    1. Cook until the sugar is dissolved and the banana is softened, which would take about 5 minutes.
    1. Transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth, about one minute.
    1. Melt the remaining 2 tbsp. butter in a skillet.
    1. Dunk a slice of challah bread in the egg mixture. Make sure to soak both sides.
    1. Transfer the bread slice to the skillet and cook until golden brown, which shouldn’t take more than five minutes.
    1. Repeat this step with the remaining three slices.
    1. Pour the banana foster sauce over the bread slices.
    1. Top with roasted macadamia nuts before serving.

    Substitutions

    • Vanilla extract — Vanilla extract is fairly common in various French toast recipes, and I believe vanilla extract is just fine. I also tried almond extract, and I was satisfied. You can substitute the two in a 2/1 ratio.
    • Challah bread — You have three alternatives when it comes to French toast, and they are challah, Brioche, and French baguette. The Rock’s French toast recipe calls for challah and works well. Still, I’ve tried the other two, and they fit the recipe like a glove.
    • Macadamia nuts — The Rock prefers to top his French toast with roasted macadamia nuts, but I realized walnuts, cashews, and pecans are also great.

    Variations

    • Toppings — If you’d like to stay true to the Rock’s French toast recipe, don’t look further than roasted macadamia nuts for topping. But why wouldn’t you add a personal touch? After all, this is a copycat recipe. While you can’t go wrong with maple syrup and honey, remember that life favors the bold. Experiment with other toppings like bacon, Nutella, and cinnamon. Oh, and depending on the season, you could also consider some fresh fruits.

    Equipment

    • Measuring cups and spoons
    • Mixing bowls
    • Electric mixer
    • Whisk
    • Skillet

    Storage

    • Wrap the leftover slices individually in plastic wrap. You can also transfer the slices to an airtight container.
    • Once refrigerated, the leftovers will last for up to three days.

    Pro Tips

    • The bread — You should buy sliced bread to adjust the portions easily.

    • The soaking — Oversoaking the bread is a common mistake, and it will result in a soggy French toast. A good rule of thumb is to soak each side for 90 seconds.
