While it’s true that nothing beats a homemade pancake, that is probably not always the case. There are pancake mixes, and then there is Krusteaz’s Pancake Mix recipe, ready in under an hour.
While most people don’t expect much from pancake mixes, Krusteaz’s Pancake Mix recipe is the ultimate proof that isn’t always the case. Along with the pancake mix, you will only be needing two ingredients: water and butter. Simply using three ingredients, you will have the most special pancakes in no time. They taste just like the ones your grandmother used to make, in our experience.

Ingredients
- Krusteaz Pancake Mix — 2 cups

- Combine the pancake mix with water in a mixing bowl.
- Stir well until smooth.
- Let it rest for a minute or two.
- Pour ¼ cup of it into the now-heated griddle.
- Cook both sides for two minutes.
- Continue until you are out of batter.
Substitutions
- Butter — Krusteaz’s Pancake Mix recipe is a fairly easy one, considering you only need three different ingredients, and one of those is butter for greasing your griddle. If you’re searching for an alternative, we used olive instead. The results? Simply fantastic.
- Water — If you’d rather have some more flavor in your dessert, you can use whole milk instead. Whole milk contains a good amount of fat, a welcome surprise if you’d like a bit more flavor.
Variations
- Vegan — Krusteaz’s Pancake Mix recipe unfortunately can’t be made vegan, since the mix contains buttermilk. Still, if you are up for it, you could replace it with Krusteaz Blueberry Pancake Mix, which happens to be vegan. Instead of whole milk, we’d recommend going with almond milk or soy milk for your vegan recipe.
- Juicy — Water is the basic ingredient, and whole milk works miracles if you’d like some more flavor. Still, if dairy won’t cut it for you, you can always use juice instead! Any citrus juice would do. You can substitute juice for water in a 1/1 ratio.
- Top the pancakes — If you have the time and the ingredients for it, you can easily transform Krusteaz’s Pancake Mix recipe into something much more personal. Blueberries are always a safe pick, and so are chocolate chips. What about peanut butter?

Storage
- You can store your covered leftover pancakes at room temperature. In that case, the leftovers would last for two days before going stale.
- We’d recommend refrigerating the leftovers. Simply transfer them to an airtight container. They will last for four days in your fridge.
- If you’d like to freeze the leftovers, transfer them to a freezer bag. Once stored in your freezer, they will last for two months.
Pro Tips
- Add eggs — Even if the pancake mix doesn’t call for eggs, you can always add an egg or two into the mix for lighter and fluffier pancakes.
- Add flavorings — Similar to eggs, a standard pancake mix won’t be calling for any added flavorings, but that shouldn’t stop you from doing it. Cinnamon and vanilla are great, and so is maple syrup!
