Over the years, I’ve tried, tasted, and written about various desserts. Some were fancy and rare, requiring lots of ingredients, and some were the opposite. One thing is for sure, ice cream is everyone’s favorite regardless of age. If you are an adult, you should try homemade ice cream, and there is not much that could beat this recipe for the Nostalgia ice cream machine.
But what exactly is a Nostalgia ice cream machine? Although it’s not as popular as it once was these days, it remains a high-quality and affordable ice cream machine, and this recipe is the ultimate proof. It’s creamy, icy, and delicious, only with six ingredients.

Substitutions
- Vanilla extract — My recipe for the Nostalgia ice cream machine works best with vanilla extract, but you could always substitute it with vanilla paste or vanilla beans in a 1/1 ratio.
- Granulated sugar — A sweetener is needed to make our recipe for the Nostalgia ice cream machine, and what’s better than granulated sugar? With that being said, you could experiment with corn syrup and honey in a ¼ ratio.
Variations
- Strawberry ice cream — Although it is a great starting point, vanilla ice cream might be too simple for some. If that’s the case with you, you can always use strawberries! Blend a pound of strawberries using an electric mixer, or simply mash them with a spoon and add them to the mix.
- Cookies ice cream — I have to say it, I am definitely a sucker for Oreos when it comes to ice cream. Crush the Oreo cookies into bite-sized pieces and add them to the Nostalgia ice cream machine.
Dietary Restrictions
- Vegan — Let’s be honest, this recipe for the Nostalgia ice cream machine might be a bit hard to make vegan. But it’s definitely doable if you are up for it. Swap whole milk for non-dairy milk. My favorite is coconut milk, and it definitely stands out amongst the others. Combine a can of coconut milk, two cups of cashew milk, ½ cup of corn syrup, sugar, and salt in a pan. Cook until sugar dissolves and let it cool. Finally, add vanilla paste and transfer the batter to your Nostalgia ice cream machine.

Pro Tips
- The salt — Over the years, I’ve realized that some people tend to omit salt. My recipe for the Nostalgia ice cream machine calls for salt as well, and I’d recommend sticking to it. Salt helps with the freezing process, for your information.
- The bowl — Your Nostalgia ice cream machine includes a bowl, and good practice is to chill the bowl in your freezer for a few hours before making our recipe.
