Substitutions
- Cheddar cheese — For most people, cheddar is ‘the’ hamburger cheese by default. Well. Beyond Meat’s burger recipe calls for cheddar cheese as well. But it’s not your only choice. Some of the best hamburgers are made with American cheese, and you can’t go wrong with American cheese. In the context of this recipe, the same goes for smoked gouda.
- Balsamic vinegar — Have you ever wondered what’s the secret behind Beyond Meat Burger’s juicy onions? It’s the balsamic vinegar. While balsamic vinegar works the best for this specific recipe, red wine vinegar works wonders.
- Worcestershire sauce — Beyond Meat’s burger recipe allows you to use Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce interchangeably, as is the case with some recipes. While it doesn’t work as well as soy sauce, Tamari sauce does the job too.
- Hot sauce — Chipotle hot sauce is the best for Beyond Meat’s burger recipe, but you can go with whatever you’d like. Keep in mind that you could opt for BBQ sauce instead of hot sauce as well.
Variations
- Hotter — Beyond Meat’s burger recipe checks many boxes, and one of those is customization. That means you get to play around a bit, adjusting the recipe according to your taste. Why not make a hotter version? A good way to start was to use smoked paprika, but you could opt for cayenne pepper for a hotter version. A stronger hot sauce could be considered as well. Tabasco and Sriracha are good options.
- Toppings — Although not as common as the other alternatives, mushrooms work well in Beyond Meat’s burger recipe. Bella Mushroom works great. Saute the mushrooms with butter and seasonings of your choice, and you should be good to go!
Dietary Restrictions
- Gluten-free — Since the protein in the Beyond Burger patties comes from peas, rice, and beans, Beyond Meat’s burger recipe happens to be vegan. With that being said, keep in mind that you should specifically ask for gluten-free pretzel buns.
- Dairy-free — Except for cheddar cheese, Beyond Meat’s burger recipe is dairy-free. Luckily, tofu makes a great alternative to cheddar cheese. If that’s not an option, work with nuts. Almonds, macadamia nuts, and cashew nuts all work great.

Pro Tips
- Adjust — Beyond Meat’s burger recipe has a loaded list of dressing ingredients, but you can always adjust according to your taste. Omit the ones you don’t like, or use more of what you like.
