Beyond Meat’s burger recipe is a match made in heaven for vegans. It’s completely normal and healthy to crave a hamburger, after all, people are only creatures of habit. But vegan burgers are just as delicious as meat-based ones. Don’t get confused, though, you don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy Beyond Meat’s burger. Non-vegan people should follow a healthy diet, too, and who says it should be boring? This one is not only a healthy dish, but it also comes with some flair.

Beyond Meat’s burger recipe couldn’t be easier to make as well. The whole thing’s done in half an hour, and you don’t need any fancy ingredients or equipment. Beyond Meat's patties are probably the only thing you will be purchasing, for that matter. Juicy and savory onions, patties that are cooked to perfection, and softened cheese will be the first things you will notice, but the dressing is the key. The earthy, savory, and juicy dressing sets Beyond Meat’s burger apart from the alternatives. Let’s check it out.

    Ingredients

    Basic ingredients

    • Beyond Meat's patties — 2
    • Pretzel-style buns — 2
    • Yellow onions — 2 medium-sized, sliced
    • Brown sugar — 1 tsp.
    • Balsamic vinegar — 2 tsp.
    • Cheddar cheese — 2 slices
    • Tomato — 1 whole, sliced
    • Iceberg lettuce — 2 leaves
    • Bread and butter pickles — 8 slices
    • Butter — 1 ½ cups

    Dressing ingredients

    • Mayonnaise — 3 tbsp.
    • Ketchup — 2 tbsp
    • Hot sauce — 1 tsp.
    • Onion — ¼, grated
    • Black pepper — ½ tsp.
    • Salt — ½ tsp.
    • Worcestershire sauce — ½ tsp.
    • Lemon juice — ½ tsp.
    • Olive oil — 2 tbsp.

    Instructions

    1. Mix all the dressing ingredients in a large bowl, give the mixture a good stir, and set aside for now.
    1. Heat some oil in a small pan.
    1. Add the onions and cook for a few minutes before adding the brown sugar.
    1. Once the sugar dissolves, which shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, pour in the balsamic vinegar.
    1. Cook for a few minutes until the onions are juicy and tender. Set aside for now.
    1. Brush both sides of the Beyond Burger's patties with oil and place them on a flat griddle pan.
    1. Cook the patties for four minutes per side. Remove from the heat.
    1. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the patties to soften them.
    1. Generously butter the pretzel buns and toast until golden brown.
    1. Place a leaf of iceberg lettuce on the bottom, followed by the burger and the cheese slice.
    1. Top with tomato slices, the pickles, and lastly, the onion slices.
    1. Pour the dressing mixture over the top bun before serving.

    Substitutions

    • Cheddar cheese — For most people, cheddar is ‘the’ hamburger cheese by default. Well. Beyond Meat’s burger recipe calls for cheddar cheese as well. But it’s not your only choice. Some of the best hamburgers are made with American cheese, and you can’t go wrong with American cheese. In the context of this recipe, the same goes for smoked gouda.
    • Balsamic vinegar — Have you ever wondered what’s the secret behind Beyond Meat Burger’s juicy onions? It’s the balsamic vinegar. While balsamic vinegar works the best for this specific recipe, red wine vinegar works wonders.
    • Worcestershire sauce — Beyond Meat’s burger recipe allows you to use Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce interchangeably, as is the case with some recipes. While it doesn’t work as well as soy sauce, Tamari sauce does the job too.
    • Hot sauce — Chipotle hot sauce is the best for Beyond Meat’s burger recipe, but you can go with whatever you’d like. Keep in mind that you could opt for BBQ sauce instead of hot sauce as well.

    Variations

    • Hotter — Beyond Meat’s burger recipe checks many boxes, and one of those is customization. That means you get to play around a bit, adjusting the recipe according to your taste. Why not make a hotter version? A good way to start was to use smoked paprika, but you could opt for cayenne pepper for a hotter version. A stronger hot sauce could be considered as well. Tabasco and Sriracha are good options.
    • Toppings — Although not as common as the other alternatives, mushrooms work well in Beyond Meat’s burger recipe. Bella Mushroom works great. Saute the mushrooms with butter and seasonings of your choice, and you should be good to go!

    Dietary Restrictions

    • Gluten-free — Since the protein in the Beyond Burger patties comes from peas, rice, and beans, Beyond Meat’s burger recipe happens to be vegan. With that being said, keep in mind that you should specifically ask for gluten-free pretzel buns.
    • Dairy-free — Except for cheddar cheese, Beyond Meat’s burger recipe is dairy-free. Luckily, tofu makes a great alternative to cheddar cheese. If that’s not an option, work with nuts. Almonds, macadamia nuts, and cashew nuts all work great.

    Equipment

    • Measuring cups and spoons
    • Mixing bowl
    • Saucepan
    • Flat griddle pan
    • Brush

    Storage

    • Beyond Meat’s burger recipe is prepared with immediate consumption in mind.
    • Place any unlikely leftovers in an airtight container or wrap the burgers individually. Once refrigerated, the leftovers will last for a day or two at most.

    Pro Tips

    • Adjust — Beyond Meat’s burger recipe has a loaded list of dressing ingredients, but you can always adjust according to your taste. Omit the ones you don’t like, or use more of what you like.
    • The rest — Once the burger patties are cooked, place the cheese slices on top and let them rest for a few minutes. This will allow the burger patties to become juicy while at the same time giving the cheese some much-needed time to soften and blend with the meat.
