    Instructions

    1. Add the barbecue sauce, ketchup, and hot sauce to a saucepan, and heat to a medium flame. Add the sugar and mix till the mixture gets a little thin.
    1. Add all other spices and let it simmer for a few minutes. When the sauce gets a bit thick, add lemon juice and cook for two minutes.
    1. Turn off the stove when the sauce reaches the required thickness.
    1. Let it cool for 30 minutes before using.

    Substitutions

    • Hot sauce — If hot sauce is missing in your kitchen, we’ve got you covered. You can try chili powder as it will give you the right amount of heat you require.
    • Cane sugar — Cane sugar is what makes this sauce mild and versatile in that it can be used with mostly anything. If you don't have cane sugar, then you can use maple syrup or honey instead. However, I would recommend using cane sugar to get the taste this sauce is famous for.
    • Barbecue sauce — Barbecue sauce gives this sauce an earthy and smoky flavor, but if you do not have it, you can use teriyaki or chili garlic sauce. Keep in mind that if you use these substitutes the consistency of the sauce may vary.

    Variations

    • Honey Chicago mild sauce — Add a bit of honey to this sauce to have a sticky, thicker, and sweeter version of this Chicago mild sauce.
    • Hot Chicago mild sauce — To make this sauce on the spicier side, try adding chili sauce to it.
    • Tangy Chicago mild sauce — Instead of ketchup, use a mustard sauce to add a tangy flavor to the sauce.

    • Spatula.
    • Stove.

    • Instead of lemon juice, add apple cider vinegar and store the sauce in an airtight container in the freezer. This will increase the shelf life of the sauce for up to 2 weeks.

    Pro Tips

    • Adjust the sweetness in your sauce by varying the amount of cane sugar.
    • You can experiment by making it spicier or sweeter by adjusting the number of your ingredients.
