- Black pepper — ¼ teaspoon (or to taste)
- Cream cheese — 1 block (8 ounces)
- Crescent roll dough — 1 can (8 rolls)
- Butter — ¼ cup, melted
- Milk — ¼ cup
- Bread crumbs — ½ cup
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients for the chicken mixture in one large mixing bowl. That includes chicken, milk, cream cheese, pepper, and salt. Mix and combine everything thoroughly. Once mixed properly, set the chicken mixture and filling to the side.
- Open up the can of crescent roll dough. Spread out the dough and separate it by the perforated triangles.
- Stuff the triangles with a spoonful of the chicken mixture, then fold in the filled-up crescent dough. Start by folding the left side in, then follow up with the right side. Afterwards, roll the crescent bundle towards the long point and finish by pinching the edges to close it up.
- Dip the chicken rolls into melted butter and then into a bowl of bread crumbs.
- Place the rolled-up crescent dough on a baking sheet. Make sure that there is a bit of space between the rolls.
- Bake the roll until the chicken inside is hot and the outside of the dough is golden brown. Baking the dough could last about 20 minutes.
- Serve with creamy white sauce or gravy.
Substitutions
- The most common ingredient in the dish, aside from the chicken, is cheese. Aside from that, the cook has free reign to add and remove any ingredient. Some prefer adding ham, mushrooms, herbs, and veggies for a tastier roll.
- Chicken is the trademark ingredient for chicken rolls. Fortunately, the dish is customizable. Cooks can use different kinds of chickens. The most popular choice is shredded rotisserie chicken or canned chicken. Other dish variations include using boneless and skinless raw chicken breasts instead of cooked ones.
- Cheese is another trademark ingredient for a chicken roll. Aside from cream cheese, cooks can also use cheddar to give the dish a cheesier taste! Some also use mozzarella cheese to achieve a gooey flavor.
Variations
- There is a popular Italian version of the chicken roll-up. It isn't much different from the standard recipe, though. For this variation, the dish typically uses Romano cheese, provolone cheese, Italian seasoning, and Rosmarino Ham. Depending on the cook, they can add and remove ingredients.
- Another iconic variation of this dish is the spinach chicken roll-up. This recipe follows the standard chicken roll-up recipe and will only incorporate spinach with the mixture filling. Recipes that use raw chicken will layer the chicken with spinach, roll it up, and secure it with a toothpick.
- Some variations use ranch dressing to add more flavor. The cook will add the ranch dressing to the filling mixture.

Storage and Reheating
- There is a high chance of leftovers with a couple of chicken breasts. To properly store these, place them inside airtight containers. Store them in the refrigerator. It should still be good to eat for up to 5 days. To serve again, simply reheat the rolls in an air fryer or oven.
- Freezing the chicken rolls is also possible. Wrap them in individual foils or plastic wraps and place them in a zip-top bag, then store them inside the freezer. If it's time to eat them, bring the rolls out of the bag and thaw them for about 30 minutes at standard room temperature. Then bake them again until they are warm.
Pro Tips
- Try sprinkling some ham or bacon pieces into the filling mixture. It should add more flavor to the final dish.
- Double up the recipe and ingredients for the chicken filling to have extra leftovers. Doing this will allow a cook to whip up some delicious chicken roll-ups later!
- If a cook is using cream cheese, keep it at room temperature to avoid lumps in the final mixture.
- When baking the roll-ups, keep an extra eye on the bottoms of the roll. They burn easily.
- Add some diced mushrooms or onion to the filling mixture for more kick in the flavor.
- Other filling add-ins are diced celery, chopped broccoli, green chilies, bell peppers, green onions, and jalapenos.
