This shrimp is indeed colossal, and it is much bigger than jumbo, which is the most commonly found one on the market. Regardless, this colossal shrimp recipe makes the best of the seafood. A crowd-pleaser, this one quickly became my favorite recipe when I was hosting a crowd.
Low in calories and high in protein, colossal shrimp contains between 12-15 pieces per pound. This makes the colossal shrimp recipe the perfect one to cook for your family, with multiple servings. Regardless of the shrimp size, perhaps the marinade is the most important part. Acidic, savory, and delicious, the marinade elevates the dish to a whole other level.

Substitutions
- Olive oil — Our colossal shrimp recipe is just fine with olive oil, but it’s not irreplaceable by any means. Avocado oil and canola oil are good choices if you are looking for a substitute.
- Lemon juice — Lemon juice provides some much-needed acidity to the butter mix, so it’s crucial. However, we also made this recipe using lime juice, and we were perfectly content with the results. If you are up for it, orange juice would do the job as well, although there will be a difference in the flavor.
- White wine — Similar to lemon juice, white wine will bring some acidity to the table as well. This one also provides a deeper flavor than lemon juice, so it might be even more crucial. If you’re short on white wine, white wine vinegar would be ideal. If, however, you’d prefer to cook without alcohol, apple cider vinegar will do.
Variations
- Spicy — This colossal shrimp recipe makes a great main dish, but some might find it lacking in spices. If that would be a problem for you, don’t hesitate to add some paprika to the marinade. Only a teaspoon or half would do. If you are up for it, you could also use a splash of Tabasco, provided you don’t go overboard.
- Cheesy — Most, if not all, recipes could use some grated cheese, on which we can all agree. The same goes for this colossal recipe as well. Go ahead and top your dish with a cup of grated cheese, preferably parmesan cheese.
- Smoky — If you’re planning to host a large crowd, this one might be for you. Adding a tablespoon of cajun seasoning to the mix could make for a nice smoky dish. A little goes a long way.

Pro Tips
- Buying the shrimp — When it comes to buying the shrimp, you should opt for fresh, if possible. However, fresh shrimp might be hard to come by, or it simply might be too expensive for your budget. In that case, we’d recommend going for frozen shrimp, which usually boasts a high quality, unlike thawed shrimp.
- Preparing the marinade — While this colossal shrimp recipe includes a well-prepared marinade, keep in mind that it is adjustable according to your taste. If you’d rather have it spicy, increase the heat. If it’s too simple for your taste, go ahead and add more herbs and spices.
