Substitutions
- Sriracha — Hellofresh’s firecracker meatball recipe calls for Sriracha. It works perfectly well, with a unique flavor and just enough spice. Still, if you’re short on it, you can get away with using Tabasco too. Chili powder, on the other hand, will bring enough heat to keep you going as well.
- Breadcrumbs — You can use fine breadcrumbs, and that would be fine. Panko breadcrumbs are simply better than the rest. Your other options include oats and crushed tortilla chips.
- Soy sauce — This provides an umami taste that is rich and salty. Still, if you’re allergic or simply short on soy sauce, you can use fish sauce or miso paste instead. The flavor won’t be the same, but it’s close enough. Another option would be Worcestershire sauce, but the flavor would be even more different.
Variations
- Make it savory — Although the soy sauce and Sriracha provide a distinct flavor to Hellofresh’s firecracker meatballs recipe, that might not be enough for everyone. If that’s the case with you, feel free to add some smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Go with poultry — Meatballs are traditionally made with ground meat, but our recipe is a flexible one, and you should feel free to go with ground turkey or ground chicken.
