Old Bay and Cajun seasonings are the most commonly used seasonings for seafood and chicken. But their recipes are closely guarded, and although it would be easy to try and make a similar one, it just won’t taste the same. Slap Ya Mama, on the other hand, can easily be made at home with just a few simple steps. As long as you follow this Slap Ya Mama seasoning recipe step-by-step, you can name it whatever you want.

    Instructions

    1. Combine all the ingredients in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
    1. Transfer the mixture into a jar, or a container.
    1. Use generously!

    Substitutions

    • Cayenne pepper — A mildly hot pepper, this one’s classic ingredient in most seasonings. If you’re short on cayenne pepper, there are some alternatives you can lean on. Hot paprika works just as well. Red pepper flakes seem like a good option as well. Though you should keep in mind that it’s a bit chunkier, so adjust accordingly.
    • Oregano — Basil would probably be the ideal alternative, with a pretty similar taste. You can use both fresh and dry basil. Italian seasoning would be fine, as oregano is one of the ingredients. Marjoram is also possible, though you should keep in mind that it’s spicier.

    Variations

    • Umami — Looking for something savory? A little bit of umami taste can add some flair to this Slap Ya Mama seasoning recipe. Adding mustard seed to the mix would be a good beginning, and if that’s not enough, go ahead and chop some dried onions. Go easy on the onions as onion powder is in the recipe.
    • Spicy — Spicy would not be the word I’d use to define Slap Ya Mama seasoning. If you want things spicier, add hot paprika or red pepper flakes along with cayenne pepper!

    Equipment

    • Measuring spoons.
    • Mixing bowl.
    • Jar.

    Storage

    • Transfer the seasoning to a jar or a container.
    • You can store it in a dark, cool place, where it will last for half a year, or even longer.

    Tips

    • Pairings — Slap Ya Mama seasoning has a reputation of pairing well with chicken and seafood, and that’s for a good reason; the seasoning, much like Old Bay and Cajun, compliments seafood well. Have it with shrimp fries or boiling shrimp, and don’t forget about cheese quesadilla.
