    Substitutions

    • Sour cream — This smoked tuna dip recipe calls for sour cream, but you can substitute it with the same amount of yogurt. It’s best to use yogurt with a similar consistency to sour cream.
    • Fresh dill — Dill pairs well with seafood in general, and smoked tuna in particular. But if it’s not your favorite, you can replace it with the same amount of fresh parsley.

    Variations

    • Customize the appetizer — This smoked tuna dip recipe provides the basics, but there are many ways to enrich the dip and adjust the flavors to your liking. You can add pickles, capers, grated cheese, and the zest of a lemon. You can also experiment with spices. You can add dried mint or tarragon. Remember to chop the extra ingredients finely and use them in small amounts.

    Storage

    • You can store smoked tuna dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Consuming it within 3 to 5 days is best for the best flavor and quality.
    • It is not recommended to freeze the dip since dairy ingredients may change in texture after freezing and thawing. If you choose to freeze it, do so the next day after you prepare it. Also, portion it into smaller containers or freezer-safe bags. Before serving, check for appearance and smell. If the dip appears discolored or has an off odor, it's best to discard it.

    Pro Tips

    • If you have a smoking device or a grill you can use for that purpose, smoking the tuna at home can be a rewarding culinary experience that allows you to enjoy this delicious fish's rich and smoky flavors.
