Top the Tater is a favorite condiment in Midwestern USA. It’s a simple yet delicious accompaniment to chips, veggies, grills, and much more. It goes well with several potato dishes, such as on top of baked potatoes, adding an extra layer of flavor that is hard to resist.

As a beloved dip, Top the Tater is a sought-after accompaniment to many parties. Its creamy and fresh flavor layers enhance the taste of potato, corn chips, and vegetable sticks. The fans are very particular about how to dip the chip into Top the Tater since it may be tricky to get it out without breaking. It’s ok if it breaks; keep trying till you get it.

    Instructions

    1. Put all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
    1. Mix the ingredients with a hand whisk or an electric mixer. Work until you get a homogeneous consistency.
    1. Put the condiment in an airtight container and set it for 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
    1. Divide the sauce into serving portions. Serve with chopped fresh chives on top.

    Substitutions

    • Onion powder — You can substitute onion powder with onion flakes. Remember to adjust the amount if you use onion flakes. It may differ according to brand, but generally, the amount equivalent to one teaspoon of onion powder is one tablespoon of flakes. Pound the onion flakes in a mortar before you add them.
    • Fresh chives — You can replace fresh chives with the dried variety for the condiment and the dressing. For the mixture, you can use one tablespoon of dried chives, and approximately one teaspoon is enough for serving.
    • Lemon juice — If you want to give it a bit more sour kick, you can opt for lime juice instead of lemon. Add the juice of one lime.

    Variations

    • Make it low-fat — You can make a healthier version of Top the Tater by substituting cream cheese and sour cream with their low-fat varieties without compromising taste.
    • Make it vegan — Those who embrace a plant-based diet can also enjoy their version of Top the Tater. You can substitute cream cheese and sour cream with equal amounts of plant-based alternatives, such as vegan cream cheese and sour cream.

    Equipment

    • Measuring cups and spoons.
    • Mixing bowl.
    • Electric mixer or hand whisk.
    • Chopping board.
    • Airtight container.

    Storage

    • You can refrigerate the remaining Top the Tater in an airtight container for up to a week.
    • This condiment is not suitable for freezing. The dairy ingredients may become runny after defrosting, which can spoil the consistency.

    Pro Tips

    • Make sure the cream cheese and sour cream are within their expiration dates and at their best state. The quality of dairy products affects the overall taste of the condiment.
    • You can pipe Top the Tater into the serving bowls for a stylish presentation. Put the condiment in a piping bag with a star-shaped tip and pipe to create delicious waves.
    • We mentioned the thick consistency of the condiment, which Top the Tater is known for. If this is the case for you, try diluting the mixture by adding two cups of yogurt. This will make the dipping experience much more manageable. Yogurt will also lighten the taste of the mix.
