Substitutions
- Grated cheese — Noodles and Company’s butter noodle recipe traditionally uses parmesan cheese. It melts quickly and tastes good. We tried to make this recipe with mozzarella cheese, and the results were just fine. While parmesan and mozzarella would be the safe and relatively cheap options, if you’d like to leave your comfort zone and try out something new, you can opt for Provolone. Keep in mind that it has a more pungent taste.
- Salt and pepper — Salt and pepper, as far as seasoning goes, will be enough for you. But if you’d rather go for something with more depth, we’d recommend using Italian seasoning. It provides a unique flavor profile that is both nutty and earthy. At least that was our own experience. If, however, you don’t have any Italian seasoning, feel free to go with a combination of basil, oregano, and rosemary.
- Parsley — Noodles and Company’s butter noodle recipe traditionally calls for chopped parsley. But if you need a substitute, feel free to go with celery leaves or chopped carrots instead.
Variations
- Chicken and buttered noodles — Noodles and Company’s butter noodle recipe makes a great dish on its own, but admittedly, some might find it lacking. So, there are several opportunities for variations. A special favorite of ours is chicken noodles. A few pieces of chicken breasts, deboned and skinned, will be enough to elevate your buttered noodles to the next level.
- Shrimp noodles — To make it richer, our solution was to change the original recipe into a shrimp noodle recipe. It’s as savory as expected. Fry a few pieces of shrimp in oil, then lower the heat and add soy sauce, along with brown sugar. Toss the noodles to coat, and you should be all set!
Equipment
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Large pot
Storage
- Transfer the leftovers to an airtight container.
- Once stored in your fridge, the leftovers will last for three days at most.
Pro Tips
- Boiling the water — Let us clarify that salting the pasta water will enhance the flavor of the noodles, along with giving the noodles some seasoning. Make sure to add ½ tsp. of salt to the boiling water.
- The seasoning — While Noodles and Company’s butter noodles recipe only uses salt and black pepper when it comes to seasoning, that doesn’t mean you should too. You can get away with using lots of different herbs and spices, so choose accordingly.
