If you are a gym addict or mindful of nutrition, you probably know what an anabolic diet is. For those who may have yet to encounter it, it is a special diet designed to make the body burn more fat and build muscle. Dr. Mauro DiPasquale created this low-carbohydrate diet, and since its inception, its fan base has constantly grown.

You can have all your meals, snacks, and beverages according to an anabolic diet plan. The anabolic diet also yields quick muscle-building and weight-loss results when properly implemented. However, experts also warn us to be careful about possible side effects. No diet plan is suitable for all; even the best ones may need individual adjusting.

Perhaps the most famous food in the anabolic diet spectrum is ice cream. Bodybuilder, fitness coach, and YouTuber Greg Doucette’s anabolic ice cream recipe instantly became a favorite of the diet universe. Now wide varieties are mimicking the flavors of popular ice cream brands. With our anabolic ice cream recipe, you can create a nutritious and filling ice cream in no time by just following a few basic steps.

    Instructions

    1. Before getting strawberries and ice cubes from the freezer, make your food processor or blender ready to work. Ensure the food processor/blender is suitable for processing ice cubes.
    1. Put frozen strawberries and ice cubes in the food processor/blender container and pulse in short intervals. When they resemble a crumbly appearance, add protein powder, xanthan gum, and almond milk. Pulse until you get a homogeneous mixture.
    1. Put the ice cream mixture into a freezer container. You can also divide it into ice cream molds.
    1. If you are serving it immediately, divide it into serving bowls and garnish it with fresh berries of your choice.

    Substitutions

    • Unsweetened almond milk — You can substitute the almond milk with another plant-based alternative such as oat, cashew, or coconut milk. Ensure these are also unsweetened since sweetened varieties may go against anabolic diet principles.
    • Strawberry — For the fruit base of the ice cream, you can use other frozen berries instead. Cranberry, blackberry, blueberry, and black mulberry all work for this mixture.

    Variations

    • Sweeten it more — The original recipe doesn’t call for any extra sweeteners. But especially if your berry choice is more on the sour side, you may add ¼ tsp. of artificial sweetener or stevia to the mixture. Frozen bananas instead of berries are another way to add that extra sweetness.
    • Make it additive-free — Xanthan gum is the thickening agent that gives the mixture its dense consistency. Some people may have a hard time tolerating this additive. So, you can substitute it with guar gum. Guar gum is made from a seed native to East Asia and functions the same as xanthan gum. Another method is to use a protein powder containing casein. If you decide not to use any thickening agent, add an extra teaspoon of protein powder.
    • Make it vegan — Most common protein powder types are whey and casein. To make a vegan version, choose a plant-based protein powder.

    Pro Tips

    • When you make ice cubes for this recipe, sprinkle a pinch of chia seeds into each cube and then pour in the water. If you want them to look glossy, it’s best to use hot water for ice-making. Freeze it, and you’ll have ice cubes not only looking luxurious but also bringing another healthy element to the table.
    • Try enriching the basic anabolic ice cream recipe by adding layers of color and flavor. Add unsweetened cocoa powder, oats, nuts, and frozen greens, or crumble your favorite protein bar into the mixture.
